Ise

Ise has flourished since ancient times as the home of the Ise-jingu, a Shinto shrine complex. Ise-jingu contains 125 separate institutions, including both the inner and outer shrines. More than 2,000 years old, it is the most important Shinto shrine in Japan. Oharai-machi next to the inner shrine has several buildings built in the distinctive Ise architectural style with gables and entries from the gable side. It also has the Okage Yokocho, a commercial complex that recreates the appearance of the town during the Edo period. In addition, many worshipers visit Meoto-iwa, crags in the Futamigaura inlet, as a site for purification.

At a 10 minute walk from Ise-shi Station (伊勢市駅, iseshi-eki) lies the Kawasaki District (河崎地区, kawasaki chiku). It first developed in the 16th century as a wholesale district by using the Setagawa River (勢田川, setagawa) for transportation. The exterior looks of the district remains as old merchant houses and magazines line up on the streets. In the Kawasaki District you can enjoy a visit to the Kawasaki Shōnin-Kan (河崎商人館, "Kawasaki merchant hall"), eating or drinking at the characteristically remodeled restaurants and cafés, or shopping in the general stores.
