Toba

Toba has prospered for centuries as a logistics center on an important sea route. Here visitors will find the island now known as Mikimoto Pearl Island, the site where Kokichi Mikimoto, founder of the company that bears his name, was the first to successfully create cultured pearls. The city is also famous for the Toba Aquarium, the only facility in the world to have raised a dugong couple. The area is one of the few in the world with working women divers, and visitors can enjoy listening to their stories as they share either a snack or a meal with them. (Reservations only.)
