Ancient Tokaido Seki-juku

Kameyama City

It prospered as the 47th lodging town of 53 stations on the Tokaido. It contains more than 200 lodging houses built between the later Edo Period and the Meiji Period, and has been designated an important national architectural region. There are a variety of sights, including the Seki Jizo-in and the Seki Machinami Shiryokan (Hall of Records), where various historical documents related to Seki-juku are stored and displayed.

Banko Pottery Center

A hall which displays and sells Banko pottery, the typical pottery of Mie Prefecture. In addition to an exhibition room and gallery which systematically introduce Banko pottery, there is a delightful shop with prices available only in the producing region and a multi-purpose hall. On the first floor, a one-day ceramic art class is offered in the studio for anyone who makes a reservation.

Started by a potter in Kuwana around the middle of the 18th century. Initially pottery painted with red drawings was fired, but this was interrupted for a time, and has become creating pottery with thin, brown designs. Teapots are the famous products but vases and dishes are also produced.

Ise paper pattern is the paper used for dyeing the ends or patterns of kimono, and has a history cultivated for some 1,000 years in the area centered on Suzuka City. 3 sheets of Japanese paper are pasted together with persimmon juice to create shaped paper using skillful technology and the heart is focused on the fingertips as they carve out a shape.

The Kameyama Castle was built in 1590 by Okamoto Munenori. The castle keep was removed in1632,during the reign of Miyake Yasumori. When Honda Toshitsugu was the lord of the castle from 1644-1648, the current Tamon tower was built on the site of the castle keep. The tower was designated as a historic site (the sole existing castle structure in the prefecture) by the prefectural government in 1953. It has a charming rustic flavor during the cherry blossom and snow season , and the Tamon tower rising above the high stone walls still retains the atmosphere of a previous age.

Paramita Museum

A space filled with the feeling of art, with charmingly planned displays from the wide-ranging collection including 1,300 pieces of Masuo Ikeda's ceramic figures and Heart of Prajna Paramita series and the Satoyama Paramita Garden, covering almost 4,000m2, with nature and art in harmony. In the Paramita Garden, you can see the sculptures of Makio Yamaguchi, 200-year-old zelkova trees, and a collection of approximately 300 kinds of mountain wildflowers. The flowers in the spring and the autumn foliage are beautiful.

Rokkaen

Rokkaen, which was completed in 1913, was designed by the English architect Josiah Condor, who also designed the Rokumeikan. Rokkaen is a Western-style mansion with a 4-story tower, Japanese style structures, and a garden with a central pond skirted by a promenade in front. It has been designated an important national cultural asset as a valuable structure typical of the Meiji and Taisho Periods.

Seki Jizo-in

An ancient temple founded in 741 by the monk Gyoki. The principle statue of a seated Buddha Jizo is said to be the oldest in Japan. In addition, 3 buildings on the grounds, the main temple, the bell tower, and the Aizome-do, are designated as important national cultural assets. The grounds contain the natural monuments of Ezo cherry trees, and the important cultural assets of the main temple, the bell tower, and the Aizomedou.

Sekisuikei (Stone Water Valley)

The scenic headwaters of the Anraku River, a tributary of the Suzuka River, is called Sekisuikei. The flowing valley between granite walls and the Suzuka mountain range create a majestic natural beauty, and it is also the focus for recreation along a mountain stream filled with the pure beauty of the mountain valley, such as mountain climbing. Sekisuikei is also popular as a campground, and there are 6 bungalows for 4 to 5 people each.

Shichiri Crossing Ruins

Kuwana City

The remnants of the landing for the Shichiri Crossing boat from Tokaido Shrine lodging to Kuwana. It was called "Shichiri Crossing" because it was shichi (7) ri (an old unit of measure equal to 3.93km) from Atsuta to Kuwana along the shore road. The large gate standing here is called "One Gate to Ise" because it marks the entry to the Ise Road.
